FAQs - booking Africa flights

  • What are the best airports to fly in and out of North America to get to and from Africa?

John F. Kennedy in New York is one of the best airports connecting the U.S. to Africa. It is strategically located on North America's east coast and offers both non-stops and layover flights to more than half of the countries in Africa. Washington Dulles International Airport also serves airlines that facilitate non-stops to Africa and offer affordable rates for layover flights.

  • Which airlines have cheaper prices on flights from the U.S. to Africa?

Generally, the cheapest airlines for flying from the U.S. to Africa are airlines that are members of Star Alliance, including LOT Polish Airlines, TAP Portugal, Air Canada, Ethiopian Airlines, and South African Airlines. All these airlines offer layover flights that are cheaper than their direct-flight alternatives.

  • Do I need a visa to fly to countries in Africa?

Several countries in Africa require American citizens to have visas. However, in countries like Botswana, Côte d'Ivoire, South Africa, Ethiopia, Morocco, Namibia, Reunion Island, Senegal, and Zimbabwe, you can stay for up to three months without a visa. Meanwhile, countries like Tonga, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, and Seychelles will issue a visa after one month of stay. On the other hand, some countries, like Zambia, Uganda, and Tanzania, give visas upon arrival.

  • Can you fly nonstop to South Africa from North America?

Yes. From airports like Newark Liberty International Airport, United Airlines has non-stops to Cape Town, and from Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta Airlines has non-stops to Johannesburg. Ethiopian Airlines has non-stops from Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. to Addi Ababa; Royal Air Maroc has non-stops from JFK and Miami to Casablanca in Morocco; and EgyptAir has non-stops from Dulles and New York to Cairo. Find your way via ground transportation to get to any of these airports to ensure you get the best rates on your trip.

  • Which is the best airport to fly to in East Africa?

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, is the best airport into which you should arrive in East Africa. It is the largest and busiest in the area because it is centrally located and receives international flights from over five cities in the United States.

  • Which is the best airport to fly to in West Africa?

Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Ghana is the best airport to fly into in West Africa. This is because multiple international airlines that fly between the U.S. and West Africa arrive at ACC.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Africa

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Africa flight deals.
  • There are many countries with undiscovered and hidden gems for tourists. One of these is the famed Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, which you can access by flying into Cape Town International Airport (CPT), which is just 30 minutes away from this landmark.
  • Both Delta Airlines and South African Airlines have nonstop flights from the U.S. to South Africa. Delta offers a nonstop flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg International Airport, while South African Airlines offers a nonstop flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport and Washington's Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Johannesburg International Airport (JNB).
  • New York’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport offers non-stops to most countries in Africa, including South Africa, Ghana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Senegal via Delta Airlines.  However, if you’re flying in from other cities such as Miami or Baltimore on Delta Airlines, expect a stop at JFK and/or Paris that may last up to five hours, depending on the details of your trip.
  • If you want to experience the savannas and robust wildlife in Africa, visit the wildlife parks and sanctuaries in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa. Book a flight on Kenya Airways at JFK, directly to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, or on American Airlines, and find your way to Nairobi National Park, which is only 30 minutes from the airport. Fly to Tanzania on connecting flights via Delta Airlines to Kilimanjaro International Airport, which is approximately 90 minutes from Kilimanjaro National Park.
  • The annual Gerewol Festival in Chad, which happens in the last week of September, is often described as the world’s most competitive male beauty pageant. In order to find affordable connecting flights to Chad from JFK on Turkish Airlines, it's advised that you book your flights at least two months before your departure date as ticket prices tend to skyrocket in the months leading up to the event.
  • Connecting flights from the U.S. to Africa are significantly cheaper than non-stops. Therefore, if your priority is saving money, when flying to West Africa, book flights that have layovers in Paris. If you are planning to fly to South Africa, stop over in London or select another flight that involves a stopover in Dubai. If your priority is saving time, opt for non-stops to Africa facilitated by your airline of choice.

Rated entertainment as Mediocre as there were major problems with the Infotainment system that took probably a half hour for them to fix.

Your crew could maybe answer the call bell at least one of the times I pressed it. I pressed it first time with 2.5 hours left in our flight bc my partner was hungry and wanted a sandwich. We finally got the sandwich with 40 mins left in the flight.

Half the bathrooms assigned to economy were out of action

Delta crushed it. Flight attendant in first was attentive and just never stopped. Honestly one of the best domestic flights I’ve been on.

They were an hour late and they didn’t have my wheelchair for me

The Flight crew didn’t serve us until about 1.5 hours into the flight because of turbulence but after it ended it was fine to move around. They served us water only and snacks and then NEVER, NOT ONE TIME came through to collect trash until right before landing about 1.5 hours later. There was absolutely no need for that. They crew was just standing around talking and visiting with each other and really never tried to see if we might want something besides water or even try to come pick up trash. This is VERY unusual for a Delta flight but it was not what I would have expected for a 4 hour flight.

The 1st class male crew member was very pleasant - the short female with round glasses , maybe in 50’s had no personality- never spoke when delivering my food, drink, & never smiled the whole trip! In fact looked annoyed when the boarding proses was happening- I would never hire this woman - unfriendly . Have never dealt with a crew member like her-

5-hour delay due to storms in Tanoa and airspace restricted by Miami traffic controllers.

A regional sized plane was used for a cross country flight with no overhead bin space. I had to "pink check" my laptop and my medications. I was NOT pleased!!!!

Overnight flight in the old style Business class, but still very good.

I was in business class, without the business class amenities. Large seat with lots of legroom, but no TV or bed. Food was okay, but I did enjoy the Turkish red wine.

Excellent service and comfort from the moment you check in. Flight crew is hyper focused on making passengers comfortable and at ease. It’s like a flying hotel!

Only chicken as a meat dish through out the flight

Nothing really was great as such. Seen other no name airlines perform better.

Quality of service on board was very inconsistent. FA service primarily seemed robotic and they barely engaged with passengers

I’m unclear why I had to pay extra for assigned seats as Turkish airlines did not honor the seating. We were placed across the aisle from each other on TK 34, and were seated behind one another on TK 694. Because my name was misspelled on e-ticket (Klawiter, instead of Klawitter) I could not log onto website to get the connection gate number in Istanbul. The monitors in the airport were a jumbled mess 1/2 Arabic and 1/2 English.

On line check in needs a lot of improvement. I tried and gave up.

Food not good, flight attendants not the best, not accommodating very ruff

the female flight attendant was racist towards me. I could tell she treated the two other passengers next to me with more softness.

It might have nothing to do with the airline but the only problem was the long waiting for baggage claim at Entebbe

My entertainment screen wasn't working and they couldn't fix it.

The gate was changed at the very last moment and no one informed us. The flight was one hour late and the screen broken, the remote control not working. One toilet was out of order . the other toilets were also not totally functioning, because the washbasin was plugged and the water couldn't flow away.

The food could be better, the beef was quite tough. The crew were friendly and helpful on this flight, which has not being my experience on other Ethiopian flights.

Flight was smooth but unnecessary long because we had to refuel at FCO Rome. Air hostesses service and response to call light could be better. Both planes were old with broken seat arms and toilets. Why Africans had to be given the farthest Gates is what baffles me and why we have to pay for Aisle seats I found really strange. Is there ever an end to ripping people off even after paying over $2300 for one seat.

The entertainment (movies) blockbuster and classics never change. I am a frequent Ethiopian flyer and this should be addressed. Not much changed from my summer flight and my December flight. It is annoying - surely you can update the selections more often. Same with food options. It becomes extremely boring to be offered the same exact meals from Washington to Addis to Maputo every trip, each time. AS

Entertainment was very poor. Couldn’t watch anything. Ear pieces were the wrong type .

Food was horrible. Our flight was not comfortable due to turbulence, seats was not comfortable, Very tight barely can not move anywhere.

The check in staff was amazing. Best customer service! The plane was old! My entertainment on the first flight didn't work at all, in my seat or in the seat next to me. The bathroom doors were old and troublesome. One of the bathrooms, the whole sink panel was broken. Everything felt old and falling apart. The airline stewardesses were amazing and quite hospitable. When there were delays, they kept us well informed. Transit was GREAT! I wasn't sure how I would make it to my next flight in 1 1/2 hours but the security lines were short and efficient. The C gates in Addis Ababa were CROWDED! That whole space downstairs was too crowded and challenging to manuever. I usually fly Ethiopian within Africa and was interested to see how the experience would be intercontinental. Overall, I would choose it again if it was cheaper than Delta/Air France or Lufthansa/KLM. I wouldn't make it a first choice if the prices were the same because the planes are so old! The food and entertainment also weren't as good. Good selection of movies but as I mentioned, on the first flight they didn't work at all (I slept so it was okay) and the 2nd flight it was glitchy. All in all, I didn't hate it but it would be a first choice only if it's cheaper.

The food really sucks And they really need to work on entertainment The movie selection is herendous .

Wonderful service and very comfy in the bulkhead in Economy Plus! Delicious food.

The BA team at Sky Harbor is deplorable, full of unnecessary attitude and poor communication. It seems like every member of the team was looking at another to solve the problem, instead of taking agency to do so themselves. I saw no less than 6 altercations with the same gate agent where he threatened to revoke the passengers boarding pass for asking a wildly reasonable question, something as simple as where the cue to board was. I’ve complained to BA before but it seems this isn’t an issue for them, which is very disappointing

Boarding poor in London,ok in Chicago. Don’t like Heatrow/terminal5

It was very good. We got a late start by about an hour and a half. However I worked rather have that than crash. It was purely mechanical. They had our tickets ready when we came off the plane in London for the next leg. The only mishap was when we got to Lisbon my husbands luggage made or bit mine didn't. All was not lost because I did finally get it 2 days later. I was really pleased that they c made the effort.

Leg space was not enough. The meal was not satisfactory.

Liked that my American Airlines status seamlessly transferred to BA so luggage check was free. Flights were on time, boarding quick. Wish they didn’t assign connecting gate so late at Heathrow.

The entire process was flawless and as expected flying first class. The only thing that I have a complaint on...when first boarding, the plane was EXTREMELY cold; then when we were trying to sleep, it was way too hot - just better regulating (especially trying to sleep) would have made it perfect.

- OK plane. Basic accommodations. OK food. The digital window shade wasn't working.

- OK plane. Basic accommodations. OK food. The digital window shade wasn't working. - Expect to be woken up more than an hour before landing when they start dinging the bell and making announcements and turning on all cabin lights to serve a snack. I would prefer they remain quiet and only serve people who want to wake up.

Better food and more space in the seats. Also when doing the web check in both times I was going in to your site the minute you open it and there is not really many seats to choose only to buy!!!

Pretty good flights! If they can let y u s know regarding delays by announcing it in the PA system it would be a good business practice!

While I had a business class ticket I wasn’t given priority to boar. Again my luggage had priority tags and these bags didn’t come out till the end!! The food at the lounge was only two type of sandwiches and warm juices and soft drinks I thought I’m paying for good services but the least u can say it’s mediocre at best. I’m considering not to use TAM AGAIN.

The service was terrible. We weren’t allowed to take water on the flight and the drinks were offered only at the end of the meal. When we used the button to call the flight attendants, they never showed up and when my daughter’s drink was spilled due to turbulences, she asked for something to clean her pants at least 4 times and eventually they gave her a tissue. The flight attendants were rude and overall the flight was terrible!

Good but your male staff should be more appreciative of customers. After all you are making a lot of monies from Nigerians.

Delays with no communication. Broken business class seat and no one seems to care or help.

The head of the flight attendants was very rude and impolite and insisted to know my nationality on flight while I had my Can passeport! against all rules!

Adequate. Served our purpose of getting there safely. Nothing to rave about. Decent value for the amount paid

Old planes that are not being maintained with at least basic cleaning. Plane smells awful, bathrooms not cleaned either. Very uncomfortable chair. Customer service probably one of the worst I have experienced. The AC dis not work, kept us on the plane for over an hour with no water and air condition

I lost my connection flight from Casablanca to Marrakech because we arrived late to Casablanca. I had to rent a car to continue my trip . I need refunds

when we ask for water or any help nobody care.. they are too arrogant
